What is TiO2?

It is a white, non-transparent (opaque) naturally occurring mineral. There are two forms of TiO2, rutile and anatase. It can be found in many products such as food, cosmetics and paint. In cosmetics it has various purposes. A white pigment, sunscreen, opacity, and for adding better coverage & adhesion to mineral makeup.

When you see negative articles about TiO2, they are referring to ANATASE form and/or NANO PARTICLE form. In our opinion, both forms should be avoided.

Rutile crystalline (non-nanoparticle) form is the only kind we use when formulating our loose mineral products. A wonderful sunscreen that does not seep into deep layers of skin and pass into the bloodstream and it easily washes off the skin.

Anatase form is typically used in sunscreens & paint. Studies have shown that it releases harmful free radicals when exposed to natural sunlight and indoor lighting. The light exposure disrupts the DNA structure, causing skin to be more susceptible to outside threats. It is difficult to wash off skin and is associated with skin aging as a result.

Product labels do not list the form of titanium dioxide used. Simply ask the manufacturer if you have any questions or concerns.
